Decks Constructions

Exterior Decks
Wood decks, whether attached to buildings or free standing, may extend living space in
outdoor areas. Small properties can be made more usable and large properties divided into
smaller living areas. Decks enhance the appearance of homes and buildings.
Construction Principles Low-level exposed decks should be built where the ground is dry
enough to prevent moisture build-up, and firm enough to support the structure. If the
ground is too wet, drainage should be provided by a drainage pad or sewer tile system.
Outdoor decks differ from standard floor construction in that individual planks are used
for flooring rather than a solid subfloor, such as OSB or Plywood, and are required to
carry the entire load. For this reason it is important to ensure that the decking is thick
enough and supported adequately to withstand the anticipated loads. Deck planks should be
at least 25mm thick with common widths being 89 and 140mm. :

Facts The historic use of decks in China
and Japan can be traced back hundreds of years. In the Chinese garden, a miniature
representation of nature with symbolic lakes, mountains, and trees is viewed from an open
wood-decked pavilion.
